The South Cobb area has been booming in recent years due to its close proximity to Atlanta proper and attractive new communities that have been recently built. In addition, there has been a tremendous amount of commercial development in South Cobb County as well. Most popular are several mixed use developments that feature townhomes, single family homes, and condominiums integrated nicely with office and upscale retail space and restaurants. The first of these was the Smyrna Market Village. Then, more recently construction was completed on Ivy Walk and construction is still underway on The West Village as well as Legacy in Mableton. Growth in the South Cobb area was also spawned by the addition of The Silver Comet Trail; a 100+ mile long recreational walking, biking and jogging trail that begins in Smyrna and runs across the Alabama State Line. This used to be a train track that was no longer being used and was paved over in the late 90’s to convert it to the Silver Comet Recreational Trail. Additionally, two new charter schools opened in South Cobb in 2007: One in Smyrna and one in Mableton. These charter schools were the result of hard-working parents who were concerned about the quality of the education that their children would receive in the existing public schools in the Smyrna and Mableton areas.
