Sandy Springs
What made Sandy Springs originally develop as a town was literally a sandy freshwater spring that is located in the area. American Indians and inhabitants of simpler days gone by who do not take modern plumbing systems for granted appreciated these springs much more than they are today. The springs are located on the site of what is now the Sandy Springs Historic Site and Museum.
Today, Sandy Springs is a very prosperous and sought after part of Atlanta. The real estate market in Sandy Springs has survived the downturn of 2007 – 2010 quite well as home values have only dropped slightly in this area. Land is very scarce and the close proximity to downtown Atlanta and Buckhead have contributed to the strength of the market. When you drive the streets of Sandy Springs, you will see older homes on large lots of land mixed in with recently built mcmansions that in most cases were lots that had older homes on them that have been torn down and rebuilt. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see a 1960’s built brick ranch with a car port next to an 8,000 square foot modern home in this area.
Until very recently, Sandy Springs was actually part of the city of Atlanta. However, in December, 2005; after many years of fighting for it, Sandy Springs residents voted to become their own city separate from Atlanta and many residents take pride in their new city. When shopping for homes in Sandy Springs, it's important to note that many Sandy Springs homes will actually be listed with an Atlanta address.
