Intown Atlanta Neighborhood - Candler Park

Asa Griggs Candler was a business tycoon in the early 1900’s who made most of his money marketing and selling Coca Cola. He was also the 44th Mayor of Atlanta from 1916 – 1919. The current site of Atlanta’s international airport, Hartsfield-Jackson was once called Candler Field and he donated a 55 acre park (Candler Park) to the city of Atlanta. The park still remains a park to this day and the homes in the blocks surrounding this park have become known as the Candler Park Neighborhood which; like many of Atlanta’s neighborhoods is on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood was actually founded as Edgewood prior to the creation of the park and in 2005 there was a boundary increase to include portions of Lake Claire.

Homes in Candler park are primarily historic but most have been nicely restored and updated to preserve the character and charm of the original neighborhood while adding today’s modern conveniences. The majority of homes in this neighborhood are Late Victorian and/or Craftsman Bungalow style architecture.
