Dunwoody
Technically speaking, Dunwoody is comprised of the area of Dekalb County that is bound by the Fulton County line on the north and west, I-285 on the South, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard on the Southeast, and Peachtree Corners (in Gwinnett County) on the Northeast. However, when most people today refer to the Dunwoody area, they are including the part of Fulton County that is just North of I-285 – at the intersection of I-285 and GA-400; straight north of the official city limits of Atlanta.
Since the Atlanta Metropolitan area has sprawled out in just about every direction, it is no wonder that Dunwoody has become one of the more expensive and sought after places to live due to its central location to all of the Northern suburbs of Atlanta. From Dunwoody, one can easily commute to downtown Atlanta, the I-85 Corridor into Gwinnett County, North into Sandy Springs and into Alpharetta, or to the Northwest up I-75 into Cobb County including the Cobb Galleria area at the intersection of I-285 and I-75. Additionally, this is one of the few Atlanta suburbs outside the perimeter (north of I-285) that has access to the MARTA Train Lines which makes it a desirable place to live for those who prefer to leave the car in the burbs and commute on a train to work in downtown Atlanta.
The ultimate location does come with a hefty price tag as homes are relatively expensive in Dunwoody. This area is also the location of several of the best medical facilities in the metropolitan Atlanta area including both Northside Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Locals sometimes refer to this area as “pill hill” because of the dense concentration of medical related offices.
It is worth noting that Dunwoody is named after Major Charles Dunwody and a spelling mistake on a bank note added an extra “o” to his name; which has been preserved through today; making the pronunciation with a long o rather than a short o as it really should be. Also, Dunwoody’s history as an official city is rather short as it did not become an officially incorporated city until December, 2008.
